What Are Wood Shavings and Why Buy Online?
Wood shavings are a by-product of wood processing, created during planing, milling, or other woodworking operations. They are thin, curled pieces of wood that retain the natural properties of their original material. While once considered waste, they are now a valuable and cost-effective material with many practical uses.

Shavings are fine pieces of wood with many beneficial properties that can be successfully used in gardens, composting, or in the production of wood briquettes. What Are the Main Benefits of Wood Shavings?
1. Exceptional Absorbency and Moisture Control
Wood shavings can absorb up to three times their own weight in liquid, keeping stables clean and dry. This property makes shavings an ideal material for animal bedding and applications where moisture control is key.
2. Natural Antibacterial Protection
Spruce wood has excellent absorbency, and after sterilisation, the shavings are thoroughly mechanically dust-extracted, guaranteeing dust-free properties and protecting the respiratory tracts of animals. Additionally, pine shavings contain natural oils with antibacterial properties that help mask odours and reduce ammonia levels.
3. Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Choice
Used wood shavings are 100% biodegradable and can be composted or used as a natural fertiliser after use. Unlike synthetic materials, they do not burden the environment and are a fully renewable resource.
4. Economic Value
Baled wood shavings are up to four times smaller than loose shavings due to compression, which simplifies storage and transport. The material also decomposes slowly, meaning less frequent changes are necessary, saving you time and money in the long run.

How to Choose the Right Wood Shavings for Your Needs?
The choice of the right wood shavings depends on the intended use. Here is a guide to help you decide:
For Animal Bedding
Many people prefer medium-sized pine shavings because they provide a perfect balance of comfort, absorbency, and dust level, offering good value for money. When choosing bedding, look for:

Dust-free shavings: Protect animals’ respiratory systems
Kiln-dried: Moisture content below 12% for maximum absorbency
Sterilised: Free from mould, bacteria, and pests
Chemical-free: Contains no varnishes, glues, or other toxic substances

For Garden Mulching
Shavings decompose slowly, meaning they last longer than other organic mulches and are also easy to spread and maintain. For garden use, choose:

Untreated shavings: Free from chemical additives
Medium to coarse grade: Better coverage and longer lifespan
Mixed wood species: Ideal balance of absorbency and decomposition

For Thermal Insulation
Shavings can be used for insulation; it’s important to compress them sufficiently to minimise settling over time and achieve the lowest possible air permeability. For construction applications, look for:

Fine shavings: For better sealing
Low moisture: Prevents mould growth
Uniform quality: Consistent insulation properties

Best Uses for Wood Shavings: From the Farm to the Home
Bedding for Horses, Poultry, and Small Animals
Wood shavings create a soft and mouldable bedding that animals can rest on, and the product undergoes a sorting process before use to remove sharp fragments. For horse bedding, we offer specially selected shavings that:

Provide a soft, springy surface to protect joints
Reduce the risk of injury and pressure sores
Make mucking out stables easier and save time
Neutralise unpleasant odours

Visit our buy wood briquettes online section for supplementary products.
Garden Mulch and Composting
Wood shavings make an excellent natural mulch that helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate temperature. Use shavings in the garden for:

Fruit trees and shrubs: Retain moisture and suppress weeds
Flower beds: Natural-looking cover with minimal maintenance
Vegetable patches: Between rows to reduce weeds
Garden paths: Create a dry, clean surface

When composting, sawdust and shavings should be added evenly in a thin layer along with soil and possibly lime, never in a thick layer which would decompose poorly.
Thermal and Acoustic Insulation
Wood shavings are the most economical insulation material with excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties. Applications include:

Loft and roof insulation
Filling cavity walls
Floor insulation between joists
Room acoustic insulation

Decorative and Creative Uses
Decorative wood shavings are used in gift boxes, not just for wine but as other decorations; it is a natural product without the use of chemicals. Creative uses include:

Gift packaging: Natural filler for baskets and boxes
Decorations: Table centrepieces and seasonal arrangements
Firelighters: Compressed with wax for easy lighting
Odour absorbers: Infused with essential oils

How to Store Wood Shavings for Maximum Shelf Life?
Proper storage of wood shavings is key to preserving their quality and absorbency:
Optimal Storage Conditions

Dry environment: Store in a dry room or under a shelter
Good ventilation: Ensure air circulation to prevent mould
Protection from moisture: Do not expose to direct rain or water
Sealed packaging: Unopened bags keep shavings clean and dry
Stable temperature: Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations

Storage Duration
Properly stored wood shavings will last:

Unopened bags: 12-18 months
Opened bags: 6-9 months when stored correctly
Loose shavings: 3-6 months in a dry environment

Common Mistakes When Using Wood Shavings and How to Avoid Them
Mistake 1: Using Fresh Shavings in Vegetable Patches
Fresh wood can temporarily deplete nitrogen during decomposition. A better solution is to let the shavings age for a while, mix them with mature compost, or keep them away from plant rows.

Solution: Use shavings between rows or compost them first.
Mistake 2: Applying a Too-Thick Layer of Mulch
A compacted layer can block water and air, which can lead to fungal growth and root rot.

Solution: Apply a 5-10 cm layer and turn it regularly.
Mistake 3: Using Treated Shavings for Animals
Secondary shavings from processed wood products may contain varnishes, glues, or other chemicals that can harm animals.

Solution: Only buy primary shavings from trusted suppliers like Wood-Břežany s.r.o.
Mistake 4: Insufficient Cleaning of Bedding
Solution: Regularly remove soiled shavings and top up with fresh ones to maintain hygiene.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wood Shavings
1. How Often Do I Need to Change Wood Shaving Bedding?
The frequency of change depends on the type of animal and the size of the stable. For horses, daily spot cleaning and a full change every 1-2 weeks are recommended. For smaller animals like rabbits, bedding can last 5-7 days with regular removal of soiled parts. The key is to maintain a dry and clean environment, which prevents the buildup of ammonia and bacterial growth.
2. Are Wood Shavings Safe for All Types of Animals?
Dust-free shavings are suitable for horses, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, hedgehogs, reptiles, rabbits, ducks, turkeys, chickens, and others. It is important, however, to use only untreated and sterilised shavings without chemical additives. Avoid shavings from cedar wood for small rodents as they can cause respiratory problems. Pine and spruce shavings are generally the safest choice.
3. Can I Use Wood Shavings from My Own Workshop for Animal Bedding?
Using shavings from a home workshop is possible, but several rules must be followed. The shavings must come from untreated wood free of varnishes, paints, or glues. They should be thoroughly dried (moisture under 15%) and sieved to remove dust and sharp pieces. To ensure maximum safety, we recommend using professionally processed shavings from specialised suppliers like Wood-Břežany s.r.o.
4. How Can I Compost Used Wood Shavings from Animal Bedding?
Shavings typically contain enough ammonia and urea to create a highly effective fertiliser that enriches the soil and promotes plant growth. When composting:

Mix used shavings with nitrogen-rich materials (kitchen scraps, fresh grass)
Add lime to regulate acidity
Keep the compost moist, but not wet
Regularly turn it for aeration
Let it mature for 6-12 months before use in the garden

5. What Is the Difference Between Shavings and Sawdust?
The difference lies in the production method. Shavings are made by planing or drilling wood and have a larger size (3-5 cm) than sawdust, which measures 5 mm to 3 cm. Shavings are curled, flat pieces of wood with better absorbency and are more suitable for bedding. Sawdust is finer, decomposes faster, and is better for composting or as a binder. For animal bedding, shavings are generally more suitable due to their better structure and lower dust content.
