How Much Ash Do Wood Pellets Produce and How Often Should You Clean?
ENplus A1 pellets leave at most 0.7% ash, which is up to 28 kg on a 4 tonne winter. Class B pellets can leave 2.0%, or up to 80 kg. Ash content decides how often you empty the ash pan, how much the burn pot clogs, and how clean your stove runs.
Ash limits by pellet grade.
The ISO 17225-2 standard, used by ENplus, sets these maximum ash limits for pellets on a dry basis:
| Grade | Max ash | Ash from 1 tonne | Ash from 4 tonnes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ENplus A1 | 0.7% | up to 7 kg | up to 28 kg |
| ENplus A2 | 1.2% | up to 12 kg | up to 48 kg |
| EN B (industrial) | 2.0% | up to 20 kg | up to 80 kg |
The limits are maximums. Good A1 pellets often measure 0.3 to 0.5%. Read the details in our ENplus certification guide.
Why ash content matters in daily use
- Cleaning interval. A stove burning 2 kg of pellets per hour produces about 14 g of ash per hour with A1 and about 40 g with B pellets. B pellets fill the burn pot nearly three times faster.
- Clinker. Higher ash from bark and dirt melts into hard lumps that block air holes and can shut the stove down.
- Efficiency. A clogged burn pot and dirty heat exchanger lower heat output and raise fuel use.
How often to clean your pellet stove
Follow the manual for your model. These are typical intervals for a stove burning A1 pellets:
- Burn pot: every day or every second day, with a quick scrape or by emptying it.
- Ash pan or drawer: once a week when the stove runs every day.
- Glass door: every week with a damp cloth dipped in cold ash.
- Heat exchanger and flue passages: every 1 to 2 weeks in heavy use, or every 1 to 2 tonnes of pellets.
- Chimney and flue pipe: at least once a year by a chimney sweep, in line with local rules.
With A2 or B pellets, shorten the intervals by about a third to a half.
What to do with pellet ash?
Wood ash from untreated pellets contains potassium and calcium. Small amounts can go on a compost heap or garden beds. Do not spread it near acid-loving plants such as blueberries and rhododendrons. Let ash cool for 48 hours in a metal bin before disposal. Never empty hot ash into plastic or the household bin.
Signs your pellets have too much ash
- Hard clinker lumps in the burn pot.
- Ash pan full in less than a week of normal use.
- Frequent error codes for blocked air or flame loss.
- Visible bark, dust or sand in the bag.
Dirty pellets cost less per tonne but take more time to clean and require more repairs. Our guide to costly pellet buying mistakes covers this trade-off.
Choose low-ash pellets.
Our ENplus A1 wood pellets are the lowest-ash option for stoves and home boilers. For larger boilers that accept it, see industrial DIN pellets. We deliver across Europe.
FAQ
How much ash does 1 kg of pellets leave?
Up to 7 g for A1, up to 12 g for A2 and up to 20 g for grade B.
Is more ash a sign of bad pellets?
Not always. B pellets are made for industrial boilers that handle more ash. Home stoves run best on A1.
Can I burn pellet ash in the garden?
In small amounts, as a mineral supplement on lawns and vegetable beds, as long as the pellets were untreated.
